My husband retired a couple of years ago, and as we've gotten older, I know more and more people who reach that milestone say: “Now I can finally enjoy life!"
It makes me sad to hear that so many people have that perspective.
This mindset suggests that decades—entire careers, years of raising families, building relationships, and living each day—were somehow not worth enjoying. That life was something to endure until retirement arrived like a rescue ship.
But here’s the truth: retirement doesn’t hand you permission to enjoy life. You already have that permission. You’ve always had it.
Sure, retirement brings freedom—no alarm clocks, no demanding schedules, no boss looking over your shoulder. But those things were never what stopped you from finding joy. What stops us is believing that joy is somewhere in the future, waiting for the “right time” to arrive.
I recently came across a quote that stopped me in my tracks:
"One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it's worth watching."
-Gerard Way, Singer-Songwriter
Read that again. Let it sink in.
Your life is happening right now. Not when you retire. Not when things calm down. Not when you finally have time. Now.
So, I ask you: What are you waiting for? What would it look like to enjoy your life today—not in spite of your circumstances, but within them? What small moment of joy are you overlooking because you’re focused on some distant “someday”?
Don’t wait for retirement to start living. Don’t let your life flash before your eyes only to realize you were waiting for permission that you already had.
Make today worth watching.
